Sabbatical Trip in March 2024

Taking a two month sabbatical in March and exploring the cacao farms in Taiwan turned out to be more more than I expected!
A few years ago, I discovered there is cacao production in Taiwan, with several chocolate makers winning several awards in Asia-Pacific Competitions. It sparked my curiosity to discover more!
The tree-to-bar chocolate concept is truly unique in Taiwan. ICA chairman Martin Christy, who has visited Pingtung's cacao farms, notes that there is no other production area like Pingtung in the world. Here, cacao is cultivated on plantations, and the farmers also roast the beans and process the chocolate, ensuring the shortest distance from the field to the table. The entire industry is built on principles of sustainability and an eco-friendly working environment.
I visited seven cacao farms and chocolate makers, and to understand their mission and vision. The founder of Taiwan Cacao (TC巧舖) established a cooperative that unites the lively hoods of 35 cacao farmers in Pingtung, aiming to provide a stable income for them and enhance the competitiveness of the local cacao industry.
Maya Farm in Changzhi, Pingtung really stands out for their commitment in sustainability. They grown banana trees in the farm and use the banana leaves for the fermentation process. The farm also features a descent-sized fish pond in the farm. Why fish pond? The aquaponics system in the farm provides nutrient-rich aquaculture water to the cacao trees. What a genius idea!
It was an eye-opening experience to see cacao trees for the first time. Talking to the farm owners and learning their stories was heartwarming. I can't wait to go back!
